Avoid These 3 Types of Food to Optimize Your Health in Recovery

Recovery is a critical time to focus on your mental, physical, and spiritual health, and nutrition is certainly a part of that. Addiction can drain us of nutrients and withhold us from getting the necessary vitamins and minerals that we need; when addiction is active, we may find ourselves neglecting food in favor of using substances or eating too many foods that simply don’t contribute to what we need to function at our best. As you’re navigating this journey to recovery, you’re likely going to find that certain cravings emerge – and they’re not always in your best interest. Addiction causes the flooding of dopamine in your brain, which is a feel-good chemical. When you’re in recovery, your brain may want something else to bring in that influx of dopamine, since substances are no longer involved.

As you work towards your nutritional goals so that you can have an optimized mind and body, keep in mind the following foods to avoid:

·    Processed foods and preservatives – these are in many foods, and it’s important to avoid them if you can. Instead, focus on organic, healthy foods. Processed foods do not have any enzymes left, which are what the body needs in order to replenish enzymes in the digestive system.

·    Caffeine – caffeine is a stimulant, and can lead a person to exhaustion, low immune system functioning, low blood pressure, dizziness, and more. Instead, stock up on water to rehydrate your body.

·    Sugar – many people in addiction recovery experience lower blood sugar, but refined sugar only depletes the body of important vitamins and minerals. Try to replace refined sugar with more natural ones, such as pure maple syrup and raw cane sugar.

A study published in the journal Addictive Behaviors Report found that most of what helps people work past foods that hinder their recovery involve creating useful strategies to prevent these issues. One example given is no longer purchasing foods with a lot of additives and buying organic foods instead. This small yet simple change can help pave the way for a healthier diet.
