Mindfulness-Based Sobriety: A Lifestyle That Builds Your Mind, Body and Spirit

Mindfulness-Based Sobriety: A Lifestyle That Builds Your Mind, Body and Spirit

Jon Kabat-Zinn, creator of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR), explained in an interview with Thrive Global in 2017 that mindfulness is a new way of being in a relationship with yourself. All too often, we become entrenched by technology, our thoughts, or other distractions that pull us away from ourselves – and because of this, we find that we’re less involved in the day-to-day lived experiences that come with being human. In the interview, he stated, “…That’s where the transformative power lies, that you’re adding a measure of deep introspection and perception to ordinary experience. And then realizing: There is no such thing as ‘ordinary experience’. Everything is extraordinary.”

When we begin to add mindfulness to our lives, we find that the colors that surround us become more vivid; conversations become livelier, moments become more cherished, and the decisions we make become more thoughtful as we navigate which choices are best for our health and wellbeing, and which ones simply aren’t.

Addiction has long been considered a disease that harms the mind, body and spirit, and this is because it takes us away from all that is present-living. Mindfulness-based sobriety is about stepping up your recovery journey by taking part in the moment-to-moment experiences and working through them, one step at a time. A 2017 piece titled “Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Therapies” emphasized that with mindfulness-based interventions for recovery, individuals are provided with techniques that enhance their ability to be more mindful in their lives, such as through:

–       Sitting and walking meditation

–       Guided meditation

–       Mindful movement

–       And more

Through this, many people have witness significant changes in sobriety – such as with attention, memory, improved sleep, executive functioning, and more. As a holistic practice, mindfulness has been shown to improve many people’s lives.
