What is the Role of Self-Efficacy in Addiction Recovery?

One of the biggest factors that can hold us back in recovery, is ourselves. We get in our own way when we put ourselves down, talk ourselves out of our accomplishments, or hold ourselves back from taking a step towards our recovery goals. We don’t always mean to do this, but it nonetheless prevents us from moving forward. Self-efficacy is a person’s belief in his or her own ability to achieve their goals – and as you may guess, it can have a huge impact on a person’s success in recovery.

In 2014, researchers conducted a study published in the journal of Psychology and Addictive Behaviors to explore just how influential self-efficacy can be on a person’s recovery. A total of 302 young adults undergoing residential treatment for a substance use disorder (SUD) participated in the study, and the researchers assessed their results at the 3,6 and 12 month-mark. This is what they found:

·       For participants high in self-efficacy, their motivation for sobriety made a small but significant impact on the total number of days they remained abstinent

·       Individuals low on self-efficacy but high in motivation for sobriety experienced just as successful of recovery outcomes compared to those with high self-efficacy

The results of this study indicate that having confidence in your ability to succeed in recovery can greatly predict the success you do find, but motivation is just as important. Even if you aren’t sure whether or not you’ll succeed, you can find strength in pushing forward for sobriety no matter the cost – and you’ll be likely to find that you’ve met some of your recovery goals.

Another study published in the Community Mental Health Journal emphasized that self-efficacy – along with hope – can really propel goal-oriented thinking in recovery. Continue to remain positive, and don’t give up.
