Comprehensive Treatment: Why You Shouldn’t Have to Settle for Less

The best programs for addiction recovery offer comprehensive treatment, which is defined by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) as, “…The full continuum of care from primary prevention to recovery support, including significant changes to expand access to addiction treatment services and overdose reversal medications.”

There are so many aspects to what makes us who we are. We each have a history with a unique inter-webbing of experiences that have shaped and molded us. Since there are so many factors that have led us to the road that we’re on, why shouldn’t those aspects of ourselves be considered in addiction recovery? The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) explains that comprehensive treatment may involve psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Key factors that could influence treatment, such as age, race, gender, trauma history, housing and employment should all be taken into consideration as well.

Why do some people settle for less? Often, it’s because they’re unaware how important all of the factors leading up to their addiction are. Just as each person has a unique learning style, there different ways of recovery that may vary from person to person. While one person may prefer a more holistic approach, another may find comfort from medication that can help soothe some of the uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal. Furthermore, another may prefer a combination of both.

Mental health should also be taken into consideration with addiction recovery, because of its key presence alongside it in many cases. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) noted that in 2014, approximately 7.9 million adults had a co-occurring disorder. The effects of mental illness could become exacerbated over time if not treated, which can continue to place a client in a compromised situation. The journey towards happiness and health isn’t about “solving” a particular problem; it’s about identifying the many factors that build up for a person and exploring healthy ways to work through them.
