How Families Can Be Supportive to Those in Recovery

Customized Treatment: Recognizing the Parts That Make You, You

Customized Treatment: Recognizing the Parts That Make You, You

Each treatment center is different in approach, services, and support, just as each person is different in addiction history, personality, health, and more. On the surface, it’s easy to assume that treatment centers all provide the same thing – but the reality is that you must select a program that fits you. As human beings, we’re much more complex than we give ourselves credit for; we’re made up of different experiences, memories, feelings, thoughts, sensations, perceptions, hobbies, struggles, circumstances and a host of other elements that do have an impact on the way we live. All of these aspects simply cannot be ignored – and that’s where customized treatment comes into play.

In 2014, researchers published an article in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. They sought to find out what elements make up recovery, which further leads us to explore how this all fits into customized care. A survey was completed by 9,341 people who identified as being recovered or in recovery, with 47 recovery elements found. Here are just a few:

·    Type of drug used

·    Severity of abuse or dependency

·    Length of time in recovery

·    Beliefs held about recovery

·    Help-seeking

·    Education

·    Marital status

·    And more

If we continue exploring all of these elements that make up one single person’s recovery, we’d find that customized care isn’t just preferred – it’s necessary. In a 2015 study titled “Precision in Addiction Care: Does it Make A Difference?” a researcher from The Netherlands made the argument for personalized medicine to take place in addiction treatment, as well as mental healthcare services. This integration provides a more holistic view of the client’s recovery, which gives them greater chances of healing and restoration.

When selecting a reputable treatment center, make customization a top priority. In doing this, you’re ensuring that your voice – and your needs – will be tended to more closely to ensure a smoother recovery process. Your unique disposition does play a part in recovery, and that should be reflected in the type of treatment you receive.
