The Importance of Nutrition in Recovery

Recovery is a holistic process where your mind, body, and emotions experience increasing levels of health and wellbeing. Much of recovery is about restoring health to your mind and body, as the cycle of addiction can wreak havoc on them. There are often common nutritional deficiencies seen in those who struggle with addiction. These include Vitamin D, B6, iron, and calcium, among others. In addition to the nutritional benefits, eating a balanced and wholesome diet can serve to reinforce self-care and awareness. Overall wellbeing can greatly improve when you’re consistently mindful of what you’re putting into your body.

It may be helpful to work with a professional nutritionist or dietician to establish a healthy meal plan during recovery and beyond. Nutritionists can also be helpful in identifying deficiencies and educating you on ways to restore your nutritional health. While everyone’s palate and specific nutrient requirements are slightly different, here are some general guidelines for healthy and balanced eating practices:

Make sure you’re hydrating. Hydration is crucial for optimal daily mental and physical functioning. Our bodies are made of primarily water and water is essential in nearly every bodily process, including digestion.

Reduce or cut out caffeine. Caffeine can alter moods and cause dependency and headaches. It’s best to avoid overly caffeinated beverages such as coffee and energy drinks.

Stay close to nature. It’s best to eat foods in their most natural form. For instance, choose a banana instead of banana cake.

Avoid foods high in sugar or overly processed foods. Like caffeine, sugar and overly processed foods can alter mood and natural hunger cues. It’s best to stick to a balanced diet of natural foods that will support your recovery and mental and physical health.
