What Are Some Ways I Can Challenge Myself in Recovery?

Recovery involves a lot of ups and downs, but it’s genuinely a learning process and that’s why it’s so important to challenge yourself. Your time spent in recovery – both formally and informally – is going to bring you many moments of discomfort; you’re going to feel unsure of yourself at times, and that’s okay. Addiction involves a series of behaviors that have developed into habits, and in order to break those habits, you’re going to experience some change. Change is discomforting, but it’s necessary in order to reap the benefits of health and recovery in the long run. If you’re ready to challenge yourself, consider the many chances you already have (or will have in the future) to do this:

·    Distancing yourself from those who condoned your addiction, and replacing those connections with people who support your recovery full-heartedly

·    Utilizing your tools when faced with triggers and cravings, such as calling someone from your recovery support system, using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, removing yourself from a triggering situation, and more

·    Be completely honest with yourself about the lies you’ve told yourself to get by and the excuses you’re making now that are currently holding you back from achieving your goals

·    Practice opening up your horizons and giving yourself love that you deserve, with an even greater capacity to engage with life and connect with others as you are without substances

As Brian Tracy, an American-Canadian motivational speaker once stated, “Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.”

Perhaps the biggest challenge of all that you’ll face in recovery is to not give up on yourself. There will certainly be times when you want to – but you won’t, because you’ll know that the path you’re currently on is the path where you need to be. Embrace this beautiful journey of life. You’ll grow stronger as you continue pushing yourself.
