At Beach House Treatment Centers, we understand the special needs of LGBTQ clients, their partners and family members. While the LBGTQ community faces the same issues around addiction, mental health, co-occurring disorders and chronic pain that other populations experience, many of these issues are amplified and include unique challenges due to the population’s marginalized status within our society. Members of this community face additional stressors, fear and emotional pain due to the influence of the dominant discourse in our society around homosexuality, gender identity, same sex marriage and parenting. This painful and powerful discourse can feel inescapable and does not only come from individuals outside of the LGBTQ community, but sadly, often from family members, friends and colleagues and even in some cases, from one’s own self-narrative. For members of the LGBTQ community, the challenges that come with substance abuse and mental health are magnified by the stress, emotional pain and hatred they have experienced throughout their lifetimes.
Beach House Treatment Center’s Executive Director, Dr. Emily Eckstein has focused her research and writing on the challenges facing the LGBTQ community and specifically, the impact of the dominant discourse on these populations and their intimate relationships. Dr. Eckstein has made training on these issues a requirement for all Beach House staff. When assigning a treatment team on these cases, she is especially mindful of the specific treatment needs of the client to assure an appropriate match. In addition to their individual weekly sessions with their primary therapist, trauma specialist and family therapist, each LGBTQ client has one individual session per week with Dr. Eckstein.
We have established designated “safe spaces” onsite at all of our facilities where LGBTQ clients can go to be provided extra support. Beach House Treatment Centers also has a direct connection with the Los Angeles LGBT Center, one of the nation’s leading support centers for the LGBTQ community and with other LGBTQ recovery specific community resources.
At Beach House Treatment Centers, we believe that each client brings a unique life experience, pattern of substance use, mental health issue, process addictions and treatment history when they admit for treatment. It is essential that the full array of each client’s underlying issues be factored into their diagnoses to achieve a successful treatment outcome. To accomplish that we develop a highly customized treatment plan for each client to all the client’s issues and assist them in achieving their recovery goals.
We employ a psychodynamic approach to providing care. Though group therapy sessions are an important component of our Concierge Program, given the underlying trauma most clients have experienced prior to treatment, we place a greater emphasis on individual therapy. Individuals sessions provide the privacy and intimacy that often make is easier for clients to share with their therapist and make progress in treatment. Concierge clients see their individual therapists (primary, family or specialty therapists) and their case managers multiple times each week. Licensed therapists are at the facility seven days a week to deal with any client issues as they arise. Efficient scheduling allows clients to go to a private health club daily, to do therapy sessions outdoors or on the beach and for clients to attend to their personal grooming preferences and shopping needs.

Dietary Wellness Program
Our team of professional chefs serve gourmet and globally inspired meals daily. Our passion at Beach House is to address your wellness and recovery journey through every aspect of your treatment experience, including the food we offer to our residents. Our Dietary Wellness Program is focused on brain health and is designed to help heal and rejuvenate both the body and the brain during the detoxification and early recovery phase. At Beach House we focus on incorporating essential micronutrients, vitamin-rich foods, and the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients. We are committed to removing the toxic GMO ingredients found in the standard, American diet (wheat, corn, soy, etc.), while implementing a low-glycemic and healthy fat diet for increased brain health.
Our Dietary Wellness Program enhances recovery by focusing on brain health. Our menus are curated to provide an increase in Omega 3s by including fresh seafood, grass fed meat, and creatively incorporating nuts, seeds, and other Omega 3 rich foods. By increasing the intake of Omega 3s, we greatly reduce the inflammatory Omega 6 fat sources which have been shown to block the uptake of healthy Omega 3s. At Beach House we have chosen not to use soybean, vegetable, canola, and corn oils and instead incorporate the use of avocado, olive, and coconut oil in our cooking. In addition to balancing this Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio, our talented chefs work with a wide array of seasonal produce, serving unique vegetable dishes and fresh, beautiful salad options at every meal. This ensures that our diet provides an abundance of naturally sourced vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that are so crucial in the healing of our brains and bodies.
At Beach House we invite our residents to have a different relationship with the food they eat; through cooking classes with our chefs, to addressing individualized dietary needs, to nutrition consultations with Registered Dietitian. This way of eating and nurturing a healthy relationship with food is not only pleasurable for our residents but, has been clinically proven to restore balance in the body, decrease post-acute withdraws, and alleviate cravings. We work from a model which acknowledges the power of the food we eat in promoting internal healing, lowering stress, reducing depression and anxiety, and increasing joy.
