The current opioid epidemic in the United States has been getting a lot of public and media attention largely due to large number of opioid related overdoses and deaths. Recent figures published by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) indicate that 20.2 million adults are dealing with substance abuse issues each year and that 50.5% of those individuals or 10.2 million adults are also experiencing a co-occurring mental health disorder. These numbers are staggering, and the effects are devastating. However, that same study also indicated that 46.6 million adults or 1 in 5 American adults experience a mental illness in a given year. That means that more than double the number of adults facing substance abuse issues during a given year are dealing with a mental health issue. Some of those mental health clients may have experienced and sought treatment for substance abuse in prior years only to subsequently discover that substance abuse is not be their primary diagnosis. Mental health issues are primary for them. Some of these primary mental health clients have managed to maintain their sobriety but many others have not. So, what do both types of clients do to effectively deal with and manage their mental health issues?
At Beach House Treatment Centers, our medical and clinical teams are very experienced at dealing with both types of mental health clients. For those who have relapsed on drugs and/or alcohol, detoxification and stabilization is the first step. For those clients who have maintained their sobriety and whose primary issues are mental health, stabilization of their psychotropic medications may be the starting point. For those not requiring stabilization and for those who have completed detoxification and stabilization, we provide a customized clinical care program to address their mental health issues.
Diagnostic Assessment (DA)*
Each mental health client undergoes a thorough diagnostic assessment. The purpose of the assessment is to determine a complete set of precise diagnoses for all of the client’s medical, psychiatric, clinical and behavioral issues that have contributed to their admission for treatment. The assessment team, led by our Executive Director includes:
Upon completion of the DA, the Executive Director determines the appropriate treatment team members for each client and works with them to develop a customized treatment plan.
At Beach House Treatment Centers, we believe that each client brings a unique life experience, pattern of substance use, mental health issue, process addictions and treatment history when they admit for treatment. It is essential that the full array of each client’s underlying issues be factored into their diagnoses to achieve a successful treatment outcome. To accomplish that we develop a highly customized treatment plan for each client to all the client’s issues and assist them in achieving their recovery goals. Mental health clients have weekly sessions with their psychiatrist and participate in groups focused on mental health issues. We utilize cognitive behavioral therapies (CBT) to address anger management issues and in our Mood Disorder group.
We employ a psychodynamic approach to providing care. Though group therapy sessions are an important component of our Concierge Program, given the underlying trauma most clients have experienced prior to treatment, we place a greater emphasis on individual therapy. Individuals sessions provide the privacy and intimacy that often make is easier for clients to share with their therapist and make progress in treatment. Concierge clients see their individual therapists (primary, family or specialty therapists) and their case managers multiple times each week. Licensed therapists are at the facility seven days a week do deal with any client issues as they arise. Efficient scheduling allows clients to go to a private health club daily, to do therapy sessions outdoors or on the beach and for clients to attend to their personal grooming preferences and shopping needs.
We utilize evidence-based treatment modalities that include:
Thorough aftercare planning and execution are essential if mental health clients want to achieve successful treatment outcomes. For that reason, we begin aftercare planning immediately following admission to ensure that a comprehensive continuing care plan is in place prior to discharge.
Each client’s treatment plan and ongoing care are overseen by our Executive Director. Unlike at other treatment centers, Beach House Treatment Centers’ Executive Director only carries a caseload when required for a particularly complex case, making the Director available to work with every client’s treatment teams as issues occur. Clients’ treatment teams include but is not limited to:
|Internal Medicine Specialist||Psychiatrist||Primary Therapist|
|Trauma Therapist||Family Therapist||EMDR Therapist|
