3 Ways to Cope with Anger in Recovery

Anger is defined as strong feelings of resentment, hostility, and annoyance. Oftentimes during recovery, feelings that our substances of choice were masking, come to the surface. This doesn’t mean that drugs and alcohol cure anger and difficult emotions. On the contrary, it indicates that the only way to truly deal with these emotions is by delving into the recovery process, getting at the root of the problem, and finding healthy ways to deal with anger. If you find you have consistent feelings of anger, it’s important to deal with them as opposed to sweeping them under the rug or numbing them with drugs and alcohol. Anger can harm your recovery if not dealt with appropriately and can lead to long term resentments, increased stress, pain, and other mental health issues. There are many ways to cope with anger effectively, such as anger management classes and various types of therapeutic and holistic interventions. Below, you’ll find 3 strategies that may help you work through anger and move into healthier emotional territory.

Therapeutic interventions. One-on-one therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) helps you get to the root of your negative emotions and learn healthy and sustainable coping skills. In these therapies, you will learn how your emotions impact your behavior and how to take control of that.

Avoid toxic situations. Avoid social or environmental situations where you know you might be triggered into old feelings of anger or drug and alcohol use. It’s important to stay involved in positive recovery circles to heal emotional pain.

Practice deep breathing. Deep breathing is a wonderful and easy way to decrease anger and stress almost immediately. When you stop and notice your body during a particularly angry time, chances are you’re taking shallow breaths and you are quite tense. Taking deep breaths into you lower abdomen can relax you and may help dissipate angry feelings in the moment.
