A history of complex trauma is one of the most common underlying issues that clients seeking treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues share. The way most clients experience the results complex trauma is through the dysregulation of their emotions and impulses. We know that the ability to manage emotions adaptively or to self-regulate is one of the most fundamental factors for healthy development.
Most trauma victims also have little or no capacity for trusting others and even familiar environments or situations can provoke disproportionate levels of fear and anxiety or depression. These symptoms can make participation in even the most basic life functions difficult or even impossible. Though trauma on its own can lead to serious mental illnesses, when clients use drugs or alcohol as coping mechanisms, their situation can deteriorate even more precipitously. Two of the principal challenges when treating trauma victims is to provide an environment where they feel safe and to establish a level of trust with clients so can share their feelings about their traumatic experiences and the actions they have taken as a response to them. Establishing trust with a client will require the client to feel safe and to believe that they have choices and that collaboration with their treatment team can empower them make positive changes in their lives.
To accomplish those goals and to help clients to deal with their traumatic experiences, Beach House Treatment Centers utilizes both:
To further enhance a trauma client’s treatment plan, we offer
Treatment Team
Each client’s treatment plan and ongoing care are overseen by our Executive Director. Unlike at other treatment centers, Beach House Treatment Centers’ Executive Director only carries a caseload when required for a particularly complex case, making the Director available to work with every client’s treatment teams as issues occur. Clients’ treatment teams include but is not limited to:
Internist/Addictionologist | Psychiatrist | Primary Therapist |
Trauma Therapist | Family Therapist | EMDR Therapist |
Case Manager |
At Beach House Treatment Centers, we believe that each client brings a unique life experience, pattern of substance use, mental health issue, process addictions and treatment history when they admit for treatment. It is essential that the full array of each client’s underlying issues be factored into their diagnoses to achieve a successful treatment outcome. To accomplish that we develop a highly customized treatment plan for each client to all the client’s issues and assist them in achieving their recovery goals.
We employ a psychodynamic approach to providing care. Though group therapy sessions are an important component of our Concierge Program, given the underlying trauma most clients have experienced prior to treatment, we place a greater emphasis on individual therapy. Individuals sessions provide the privacy and intimacy that often make is easier for clients to share with their therapist and make progress in treatment. Concierge clients see their individual therapists (primary, family or specialty therapists) and their case managers multiple times each week. Licensed therapists are at the facility seven days a week to deal with any client issues as they arise. Efficient scheduling allows clients to go to a private health club daily, to do therapy sessions outdoors or on the beach and for clients to attend to their personal grooming preferences and shopping needs.
We utilize evidence-based treatment modalities that include:
Dietary Wellness Program
Our team of professional chefs serve gourmet and globally inspired meals daily. Our passion at Beach House is to address your wellness and recovery journey through every aspect of your treatment experience, including the food we offer to our residents. Our Dietary Wellness Program is focused on brain health and is designed to help heal and rejuvenate both the body and the brain during the detoxification and early recovery phase. At Beach House we focus on incorporating essential micronutrients, vitamin-rich foods, and the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients. We are committed to removing the toxic GMO ingredients found in the standard, American diet (wheat, corn, soy, etc.), while implementing a low-glycemic and healthy fat diet for increased brain health.
Our Dietary Wellness Program enhances recovery by focusing on brain health. Our menus are curated to provide an increase in Omega 3s by including fresh seafood, grass fed meat, and creatively incorporating nuts, seeds, and other Omega 3 rich foods. By increasing the intake of Omega 3s, we greatly reduce the inflammatory Omega 6 fat sources which have been shown to block the uptake of healthy Omega 3s. At Beach House we have chosen not to use soybean, vegetable, canola, and corn oils and instead incorporate the use of avocado, olive, and coconut oil in our cooking. In addition to balancing this Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio, our talented chefs work with a wide array of seasonal produce, serving unique vegetable dishes and fresh, beautiful salad options at every meal. This ensures that our diet provides an abundance of naturally sourced vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients that are so crucial in the healing of our brains and bodies.
At Beach House we invite our residents to have a different relationship with the food they eat; through cooking classes with our chefs, to addressing individualized dietary needs, to nutrition consultations with Registered Dietitian. This way of eating and nurturing a healthy relationship with food is not only pleasurable for our residents but, has been clinically proven to restore balance in the body, decrease post-acute withdraws, and alleviate cravings. We work from a model which acknowledges the power of the food we eat in promoting internal healing, lowering stress, reducing depression and anxiety, and increasing joy.
