What is Trauma-Informed Psychodrama?

What is Trauma-Informed Psychodrama?

Research estimates that approximately 70% of Americans have experienced some form of trauma at least once in their lives, and it’s quite likely that trauma has affected many in addiction recovery, too. The physical and emotional suffering that can derive from trauma weighs heavily on the heart, and this isn’t to be ignored during treatment. Trauma-informed treatment centers provide optimal care by understanding the ways that trauma can impact a person’s thoughts and behaviors – as well as their recovery process.

There are many ways to address issues related to trauma in addiction recovery, and psychodrama is one creative outlet that has helped many gain new understandings and perspectives on their life experiences. Psychodrama is defined by the American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama as, “…Guided dramatic action to examine problems and issues raised by an individual or group.”

A 2017 study published in the journal Dramatherapy sought to explore the effectiveness of psychodrama therapy after a 12-Step based primary addiction treatment was completed. Two case studies were written and described two participants with unique identities. In one case, sculptures were created, and a participant viewed his mother as two people due to the trauma he experienced with her. In another case, group members were asked to do a role exercise and one participant reached a new understanding of past traumatic events that had happened to her.

When creative treatment approaches such as psychodrama are trauma-informed, the environment in which clients are participating in becomes more inclusive to all of the events that have occurred in a person’s life. Healthcare professionals are more sensitive to the nature of topics being covered, and more awareness, understanding and support is available to those who are trying to work through past events that have previously held them back. The more trauma-informed treatment centers are, the better they are able to support those recovering.
